Message from NO2ID's National Coordinator
"If you've got nothing to hide, you've got nothing to fear." How many
times have you heard that tired old phrase trotted out by ID card
proponents over the past few years ...but how many times in the last
month?
Independent polls regularly now show that more people don't want ID
cards than do. The 'Data-gate' scandal and subsequent breaches have
finally woken the nation to what NO2ID has been saying for years.
More than ever, we must keep the pressure on. The government will not
relinquish the ID scheme without a fight.
Ministers are still hell-bent on implementing the 'Transformational
Government' agenda - yet more of your personal information, shared by
even more people and organisations without your knowledge or consent -
and plans for alternative ID infrastructures, e.g. based on
concessionary travel schemes, are already well advanced.
We can win. We must win. And with your help, we will.
I wish you and your families a peaceful and ID-free Christmas, and look
forward to campaigning with you for freedom, privacy and personal
security in 2008.
Phil Booth
National Coordinator, NO2ID
Make the NO2ID Pledge your New Year's Resolution
NO2ID's new Pledge is a new form of non-violent direct action:
pre-emptive resistance. You *can* do something positive now. Something
totally legal, that has its own life, not determined by us, but by YOU.
If enough people publicly declare they will not cooperate, government
seizure of personal identity will become impossible.
Anyone can do it. Anyone can help others do it. The more who do, the
easier it is.
The government cannot now be trusted. People across the country are
deciding they can choose for themselves who they are and who they
trust. The NO2ID Pledge - http://www.no2id.net/pledge/ - is a way of
declaring to your friends and neighbours (tell everyone!) that you will
not cooperate with any further government seizure of your personal
information.
Data sharing - Have your say
A 'Data Sharing Review', launched by the Ministry of Justice last week,
is inviting submissions from the public. Please take some time over the
holiday period to tell them what you think:
The review closes 15th February.
And please also send NO2ID details (with evidence) of occasions where
public authorities or others are demanding more information than
necessary for the purpose. Our address is NO2ID, Box 412, 19-21 Crawford
Street, London W1H 1PJ or send by e-mail to office at no2id.net
