ID-DAY *IS* COMING - SPREAD THE WORD

Many thanks to all of you who have already got in touch about setting up
a NO2ID group in your area or sent in petition forms following our
declaration of 'ID-Day', 26th March 2007. The head of the UK Passport &
Identity Service (UKIPS) has now confirmed on national radio that ID
interrogation centres *will* be opening their doors for business around
this time.

We have just EIGHT weeks to spread the word.

The majority of those to be called in for interrogation in the first
year will be 16-24 year olds, as UKIPS is initially targeting those
applying for their first adult passport.

We therefore need you to tell *every* young person that you can that (if
they don't already have one) they need to apply for their first adult
passport AS SOON AS POSSIBLE so as to avoid a complex, intrusive
interview leading to possible later entry on the National Identity
Register - as well as the added expense and delay of having to travel to
an interrogation centre.

Government documents show that it expects fully 1 in 4 young people to
fail to get a passport in time to make their trip because of extended
delays in the new system, and it is already paying for adverts to try to
fool/convince people that there is some 'benefit' for them in all this.
There isn't.

NO2ID will, of course, be taking further action later in February - but
it is vital that the message begins to get out to young people NOW, to
counteract government propaganda. E-mail this newsletter directly to
(other) young people you know; write to your local papers appealing to
parents and grandparents to tell their family members; spread the word
on the web, on campuses and at colleges, bulletin boards, MySpace...

We do still want you to use the petition whenever and wherever you can:
http://www.no2id.net/downloads/forms/NO2IDpetition.pdf The more young
people we reach, the better right now. Please send all completed sheets
to NO2ID, Box 412, 19-21 Crawford Street, London W1H 1PJ and thank you
for your help - every new supporter and donation helps.

Don't tell anyone about Data Protection Day

Monday was Europe's first-ever Data Protection Day. Twenty-six countries
took taking part but can you guess which one didn't? Well maybe the UK
government, who are trying hard to destroy privacy(aka Data Sharing) and
are butchering the Freedom of Information Act, didn't much like what the
day was all about. The Council of Europe describe the day as: "to give
European citizens the chance to understand what personal data is
collected and processed about them and why, and what their rights are
with respect to this processing." Hmm, probably not their cup of tea.

Data Matching powers proposed in new Serious Crime Bill

The government's newly published 'Serious Crime' bill is one of a
growing list of bills that introduces data sharing proposals. Schedule 6
of the bill, entitled 'Data Matching', lays out plans to let anti-fraud
agencies have access personal information in various databases. Such
"fishing expeditions" are currently be illegal. Some of the others bill
that have data sharing provisions are the Digital Switchover bill,
Statistics & Registration bill and the UK Borders Bill. The bill is
online at www.publications.parliament.uk/pa/pabills/200607/serious_crime.htm
See the NO2ID forum for information and discussion on Data Sharing at

BBC to turn identity card crisis into a drama

star upcoming Blood Diamonds actor David Harewood. Set sometime in the
near future, the plot centres around grizzly murders carried out with
the assistance of ID card theft.

Schools need consent to fingerprint kids? - The Register 31/1/07

The Information Commissioner has declared that schools should ask for
the consent of children and parents before they take pupil's
fingerprints, despite there being no legal obligation for them to do so.
A spokesman for the Information Commissioner's Office said: "There's
nothing in the [Data Protection] act that makes that clear," and could
not explain what would happen to schools that failed to follow this advice.

The UK's Information Commissioner has issued new guidance to members of
the public on the government's plans to develop a national system of
electronic care records, based on enquiries that have been received.
Overall the Commissioner backs plans for a national system of summary
records but says he plans to keep a close eye on how the accuracy of
information is ensured, the way people are kept informed and how they
can access their records.

technology developed for security will be used to track, label and
control workforces.
