Blunkett threatens to sue for £30 ID card refund

Chris Williams writes in The Register:

David Blunkett this morning claimed he may sue the government for a refund on his £30 ID card, which new laws will render worthless by the end of summer.

The former Home Secretary and political originator of the ID cards scheme went on Today this morning to explain why he was right to introduce the scheme and the ConDem coalition is wrong to scrap it.

Blunkett’s cheerleading for ID cards led to the Labour government spending £257m on the scheme for nothing.

Mr Blunkett’s interview on the Today programme can be heard here.

These people never like to admit that they were wrong, do they? The Register also says, very aptly, “on the question of Blunkett’s missing thirty quid, we at El Reg would respectfully suggest the many, many thousands of pounds he has made as an advisor to ID card vendors since leaving the Home Office ought to be compensation enough”.
Further, I would like all those MPs who voted for the scheme to be personally liable for the vast sums already wasted on it, about £1700 per card.
He said scrapping the scheme won’t make life better for anyone: well, regardless of how much money it will save (which is a secondary matter) I beg to differ. Until now,I was facing the rest of my life being bullied and fined simply because I can see right through their rotten ID scheme. Now I can look forward to living in a free society again (from this angle at least).
He now says it was an “entitlement”card, having woken up to the fact that it won’t stop terrorism. Well the choice whether I actually want to claim any “entitlements” should be mine alone.

His advisory fees from ID card pedlars coming to an end, Dave has time on his hands. Who’s he going to sue, the IPS? Dave and the IPS are both stupid, wasteful, inept; a disgrace to this nation.
