After 23 days, 11 phone calls, 4 bus journeys, 2 interviews … I get 1 ID card

Stewart Whittingham, writing in The Sun, describes his experience applying for an ID card:

My ID card journey began when I rang the helpline on November 16.

The official said they would phone back, but when no call came after a few days I rang again.

A friendly woman took my details and promised to send me a form – which never arrived – but she could not put me through to the interview line. I rang back and another official took 15 minutes to take my details, then cut me off. On calling back I was finally given an appointment – but when I arrived, apologetic staff said the slot was only intended for “government staff”.

After further calls I arranged another interview on December 3, but the computer of the official quizzing me failed and he needed a colleague to help fill out the forms. I had my fingerprints and photo taken before I handed over £30.

Then I waited five days for my card to arrive. The cards can be used as travel ID in Europe, but you need a £77.50 passport to get one.
