DNA of terror suspects could be held for life

Tom Whitehead writes in the Daily Telegraph:

Terror suspects released without charge could have their DNA stored for life, under plans announced by the Home Office.

Innocent people arrested but not charged or convicted of terror-related offences are to be treated separately to all other alleged crimes with their fingerprints and other genetic profiles potentially retained indefinitely.

In contrast, those innocent of any other suspected crime will be kept for a maximum of six years.

The proposals have been drawn up in the wake of a European Court of Human Rights ruled last year that a blanket policy of retaining profiles of innocent people indefinitely was illegal.

Up to a million innocent people are currently held on the national database.
