According to the Daily Star on Sunday:

Whitehall boffins in charge of introducing ID cards can’t even hang on to their own security passes.

They are losing them at the rate of 23 a day, adding up to 17,000 over the last two years.

And these are the same officials who are planning to fine members of the public up to £1,000 for failing to report if their identity cards are lost, stolen or damaged.

The Daily Telegraph also carried the same story on Saturday.
