Clegg vows to defy ID cards law
Patrick Wintour writes in The Guardian:
Nick Clegg, the odds-on favourite to become Liberal Democrat leader, yesterday announced that he will break the law and refuse to provide details of his identity if the government presses ahead with plans to make ID cards compulsory.
Drawing a parallel with resistance to the poll tax, he said he would also urge his fellow MPs and Lib Dem councils not to cooperate. Under the existing law, many British citizens will have their details voluntarily placed on to the ID card database when they apply for a passport or a driving licence.

Its good to see Nick Cleggs stand against the NIR and his refusal to have his details entered on the database. However I believe that his opinion will carry more weight if he was able to persuade not only his college’s in the Lib Dem party, but also Tory MPs, Conservative controlled councils, and like minded Labour MPs. For my part I have resolved long ago never even to consider voting Labour at any elections either local or national and pursue a Civil Disobedience stance and refuse to give my details for the database.

A clip of Clegg accompanied Worcester’s Brian Gladman as he was interviewed on BBC local radio this afternoon. Anyone interested may be able to hear him using BBC Hereford and Worcester’s Play Again, for the Drive Time show…
