Consultant ‘army’ already busy on UK ID card scheme

John Lettice in the Register and Philip Johnston in the Telegraph report that the UK’s ID scheme already has more than 80 people working on it, according to figures obtained by the Liberal Democrats.

Europe tightens travel checks

British holidaymakers travelling to France and several other European countries will be required to undergo fingerprint checks under new rules announced yesterday, writes Nicholas Watt in the Guardian.

The ever-vigilant Statewatch report that the EU Council Presidency are recommending the current biometric visa proposals be abandoned due to “collision” of chips and will ask the EU Commission to amend its proposal.

Dutch rush to get ID cards

A report from the Netherlands that over 225,000 applications for identity cards have been filed in the last two months. Everyone aged 14 or over must carry valid identification or face a fine under a new law that came into force on 1st January 2005.
