ID cards for the right reason?

Sarah Arnott, in Computing, argues that the government’s rationale for identity cards should focus on trade rather than terrorism.
Despite being in favour of ID cards, she begins by saying:
The government’s approach to ID cards is all wrong. That’s not to say that the scheme should be scrapped, but founding it on a lot of bombast [...]

Steve Bowbrick in The Guardian on the seductiveness of technological solutions:
ID cards cannot and will not eliminate identity theft, fraudulent benefit claims and terrorism because they are social problems, and technology is notoriously bad at solving social problems.

Nationalists slam ID cards

The Isle of Man Today reports that Manx nationalist group Mec Vannin has slammed the idea of compulsory national identification cards.
Chairman Mark Kermode said:

PA Consulting awarded ID cards contract

Eye to electronic eye with new ID cards

UKPS biometric enrollment trials are underway in London and Glasgow, with others in Leicester and Newcastle to follow. The Home Office wants 10,000 volunteers to “investigate the practicalities” of enrollment, and promise that all information gathered will be destroyed when the trials end in August.
